A week removed from my first 5k of 2013 I am wishing I was back on the beach! Although it was a very frigid, windy morning on a Rhode Island beach i truly enjoy this run. It’s one of the smaller races with only 130 runners. Having (sortof) planned out how long I would be standing outside I was thrown off a bit by the delayed start. Connecting with a couple fellow runners was enjoyable and helped pass the time quicker.
My feet started to go numb but once the run was underway the cold disappeared and resumed feeling by mile 2. The first mile was just beach. Comparing to last year it went smooth, I ran hard but didn’t push it. I followed a woman that kept a great pace which helped manage mine. I was proud that when she dropped back I kept up, something that I would not have done last year. At about the 2.5 mile marker running along the trail that overlooks the coastline is when a couple of 8-9 kids passed me instead of getting discouraged I did my best to manage my own pace… It was essentially a non-stop run not counting the mini-obstacle through the old rock beach house. Last year I stopped to take pics, not this year!
High fives at the finish are nice but didn’t have my boys cheering me on. It was way too cold but it would have been even cooler for them to see mommy didn’t finish last this year – there will be plenty more races to come!
It is a very well organized race, inexpensive to enter and they require food donations for local food pantry. At the end there were plenty of bagels, hot water for soups and hot chocolate. An impressive spread ! You can learn more here.
Race #1 of #13in2013 is done.
