Race #5 : 05/27/2014 Newport 10 Miler, Newport, RI – 1:47:06 10:43/M
On race day this was the longest run to date for me on the pavement. It was a non-stop breathtakingly gorgeous run around Newport shore line and roads. All sorts of weather. Lots of sun but the last mile brought lots of cold wind! The run was very well put together from sign, packet pickup to the race start to finish. There were many supportive spectators along the way. Made sure to grab a high five every where I could ( including the slightly serious officer directing traffic around mile 7 or 8 ).
As mentioned the last mile was tricky, mentally and physically running back into Fort Adams. I know I told myself the entire mile not to stop, you’ve come this far. No stopping now. There was a woman about 1/2 mile from the finish that was fatigued, stopping and going. I simply ‘grunted’ to her “let’s go”. I want to say that to so many more runners during my runs but I’m usually afraid they are going to leave me in their dust… It was more of a kick for myself than to her.
Right after I crossed the finish line I felt a hand on my arm, it was her telling me “thank you so much – I really needed that – great job”. It was overwhelming to say the least. Make a difference. One person at a time.
My girlfriend had an awesome run as well, it was great morning “play date” for us ladies.
Very pumped at the finish line and the STILL for accomplishing this run.
